For years, the USDA has banned the slaughter of downed cows, but current regulations still allow for the cruel slaughter of downed pigs. Mercy For Animals and coalition partners have sent a letter urging President Biden to direct the USDA to close the downed pig loophole!

What are “downed” animals?
Downed animals are too injured, weak, or sick to walk or stand on their own. Farmed animals can become downed at an auction or a farm, feedlot, or market; during transport; or at the slaughterhouse.

One of my top priorities as a voter is the protection of farmed animals. Despite the prohibition on slaughtering downed cows, current USDA regulations allow for the slaughter of downed pigs. Slaughtering downed pigs is a cruel policy failure and a possible public health hazard. Downed animals suffer terribly. In addition to cruel handling, they often endure lack of food, water, and protection from the elements. They spend hours in filthy, excrement-filled holding pens awaiting slaughter.

Pigs represent 75% of all livestock slaughtered in the United States, and an estimated 500,000 downed pigs arrive at meat processing plants annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year pork containing bacteria causes 525,000 human infections; 2,900 hospitalizations; and 82 deaths. Currently consumers have no way to tell whether the pork they eat comes from downed pigs.

I urge President Biden to direct the USDA to implement protections for downed pigs.
