NOTHING NEEDED HERE
Pigs unable to walk or stand without assistance due to injury, fatigue, or disease (nonambulatory, or “downed,” pigs) suffer neglect and mistreatment for the sake of Big Meat’s profits. This isn’t just cruel—the industry’s continued neglect poses a significant safety risk to consumers, as well as workers at farms and meat-packing facilities. The USDA, the Biden administration, and the courts have failed to stop it, so we are calling on Congress to act.
The Pigs and Public Health Act, introduced by Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), is critical legislation that would create standards for pigs in farms, during transport, and at slaughter. It would establish a public health hotline for agricultural workers (employees and contractors) to blow the whistle on violations of the standards. It would also increase transparency by requiring public reports of violations.
