Just like the dogs and cats we love at home, pigs are sensitive and intelligent individuals who deserve protection from cruelty. Multiple undercover investigations have revealed the dire conditions and inhumane treatment they endure.

Canada currently has no federal laws protecting animals in farms, but the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) establishes codes of practice for animal agriculture.

Join us in calling on provincial pork associations to ensure that the pig industry’s code of practice is updated to reduce suffering for piglets by banning painful procedures like tail docking, requiring anaesthetic for castration at all ages, and prohibiting “thumping” as an acceptable killing method.

As a Canadian, one of my top priorities is animal welfare.

I am aware that the National Farm Animal Care Council is commencing a full update to the Pig Code this year. Just like the dogs and cats we love at home, pigs are sensitive and intelligent individuals who deserve protection.

I am calling on provincial pork associations to use your role to advocate to the Canadian Pork Council to create standards that will reduce the suffering of piglets by: 1) banning painful procedures like tail docking, 2) requiring anaesthetic for castration at all ages, and 3) prohibiting “blunt trauma” as a conditionally acceptable killing method.

The time to act is now to ensure that these priorities are addressed during the code update process. Thank you.
