Just like the dogs and cats we love at home, pigs are sensitive and intelligent individuals who deserve protection from cruelty. Multiple undercover investigations have revealed the dire conditions and inhumane treatment they endure, underscoring the urgent need for regulatory reform and better enforcement of animal welfare standards.

The Pigs and Public Health Act, introduced by Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), is critical legislation that would create real, enforceable standards for pigs in farms, during transport, and at slaughter. It would establish a confidential online portal for agricultural workers (employees and contractors) to blow the whistle on violations of the standards. It would also increase transparency by requiring public reports of violations.

As your constituent and a voter, one of my top priorities is meaningful food-system reform. Accordingly, I'm writing to express my views on an important issue.

Downed pigs, or pigs who are unable to stand due to injury, illness, or fatigue, endure considerable cruelty in industrial animal agriculture. The USDA refuses to act on this issue, and I am asking you to step up and end the egregious neglect and mistreatment of these suffering animals to prevent harm to pigs and protect consumers and agricultural workers from health and safety risks. Please co-sponsor the Pigs and Public Health Act (PPHA) today.

The PPHA would create standards for pigs in farms, during transport, and at slaughter. It would establish a public health hotline for agricultural workers (employees and contractors) to blow the whistle on violations of the standards. It would also increase transparency by requiring public reports of violations and a joint report by the CDC and FSIS addressing the food-safety threats associated with downed pigs.

Rather than wait for yet another public health crisis, Congress must act now.
